The history of the Bear, which was built in Dundee in 1874 and sank 89 years later in a gale south of Nova Scotia. She had survived heroic service in the icy seas of the Arctic and Antarctic, being used to rescue Greely from Ellesmere Land. She also patrolled the Alaskan shores and was the mainstay in Admiral Byrds expeditions.
