Sydney Wignall and John Harrop, leader and surveyor respectively of the Welsh Himalayan Expedition to West Nepal, were camped at 16,000 feet on the undemarcated Nepal-Tibet frontier. Without warning their camp was raided by armed soldiers of the Chinese People's Liberation Army who informed them they would be taken into Tibet for questioning on suspicion of being spies. They endured prolonged interrogation under hardous condition. When finally released they were forced, against their will, to make a challenging winter crossing into Nepal by one of the highest and most dangerous Himalayan passes.
